Our History
Markey Maintenance Services, Inc. had its start in 1975 as Markey-Powers & Associates. We were known as AmeriClean Janitorial and later as Amclean Janitorial Service. John Markey and his partner Ray Powers started in business on March 15, 1975 by servicing the floor care needs for Riverside IGA Market in Montrose, MI and Frank's Supermarkets in Chesaning & St. Charles, MI.
As with many startup companies, the two partners cleaned at night and managed their fledging business during the day. Within several months the duo started selling the TASKI line of cleaning supplies and machines that were imported from Switzerland, a business relationship that is still in place in 2008!
Our
first employee, Wayne Obermiller, was hired in 1976. Thirty
years later, Wayne is still an important part of the Educlean Services team
of associates. In 1999 Wayne was bestowed the highest honor of “BSCAI
Custodian of the Year”. He was awarded a $1,000.00 check, wall plaque
and medallion during the association’s Annual Convention & Trade
Show held in Chicago.
In mid-1977, the business moved to Saginaw from Montrose and the partners, working out of an apartment complex, expanded the company’s services to include offices, schools and industrial facilities. Travel World was one of our first Saginaw customers. Later that same year, John Markey purchased controlling interest of the firm.
The company joined what was then known as the Building Service Contractors Association (BSCA) in 1979. The association recognized our firm as the association’s 1,000th member at their annual convention in Dallas, Texas. This began a long relationship between MMSI and BSCAI that continues today.
In 1987, recognizing the future of the industry was embarking on new changes and that these changes would encompass more than cleaning functions, a new company, Absolute! Building Maintenance was established to meet the needs of our clients into the next millennium.
The 1990’s witnessed the steady growth and development of our business; the start of a state-wide association for building service contractors of which MMSI was a Charter Member; the formation of MMSI’s industry peer review group; and the election of John Markey to the BSCAI Board of Directors.
Today, our three divisions: Absolute! Building Maintenance; Educlean Services of Mideastern Michigan; and Medi+CLEAN Environmental Housekeeping, provide services to a variety of clients at over 170 locations from Clare to Port Huron and Holly to Standish, an area that encompasses over 1,200 square miles. MMSI currently employs over two hundred associates with a deep management staff who are experts in the building services industry.
For the past 31 plus years MMSI has been a regional leader in the facility maintenance industry with innovative methods and techniques. Our slogan says it all: “Since 1975, We’ve Been Dedicated to Maintaining Your Clean Image”.
